Basshogg HQ at night

The Plan

With the excavation and the tedious move completed, it’s time to turn this shed into an HQ! The plan is to:

  • Put a deck on the front
  • Stain over the red with a dark matte grey
  • Install vinyl flooring
  • Run electricity from the cottage
  • Install exterior and interior lighting
  • Install stained plywood ceiling
  • Build a Bar
  • Mill the pine trees we cut
  • Burn and install pine board walls
  • Install a fridge and icemaker
  • Hang a Dart Board
  • Do some landscaping

The Deck

The deck was kept simple with an 18×12 rectangular design. Nothing fancy with the pressure treated lumber. Since the deck is low to the ground there is no need for any railings and only one step required.

The Stain

staining the shed
Staining the shed was definitely the hardest part of this project! The rough cut pine stained red needed 2 coats and still shows some hints of the red in some light. As the results show though, the effort was worth it.

Floors and Ceiling

I chose a luxury vinyl for the floor. Waterproof and easy to clean were the deciding factors. I was thinking about just staining the plywood floor but it was in a bit of rough shape from being an actual shed for a few years. The ceiling is where I decided to go with 1/4 stained plywood. Easy to work with and the stain turned out just right.

Electricity and Lighting

Running electricity to the shed involved a 150 ft trench to bury the 6 gauge wire in. Connecting a 60 amp sub panel, and wiring the shed with pot lights, exterior lights and outlets. None of this is my specialty or trade but where best to learn than at the cottage in a shed?

Milling, Burning and Building

The Bar was a simple design framed with 2×2 and sheathed with 3/4″ plywood. It was stained with 4 coats of shiny black poly to protect it. The bard top is 2″ thick  burnt pine milled from the trees we took down. It was sanded and coated 4 times with a clear poly. The mill was here all day and cut us more than enough wood to complete this project. Burning the wood was a fun experience and left the boards looking great. The best thing is that it was so easy, way better than staining. I added some finishing touches like the backlit flags on each end and called it a day!

Finishing Touches

The commercial beverage fridge and decals arrived right on time. I built a frame for the dart board to protect the beauty walls and did a little work outside to spruce things up. The black cedar mulch was the perfect landscaping addition and will provide a zero maintenance look for years to come.

Summary

And with that, Basshogg HQ is open for business. Over the rest of the summer some finishing trim work will happen. Some more decorating will also have to be done to get more of a fishing vibe going on. We have lots of ideas and great photos to hang, but for now it’s time to hit the water and enjoy the lake!
