When it comes to moving dirt efficiently and effectively, few tools can match the power and versatility of a skid steer and an excavator. Whether you’re tackling a landscaping project, digging trenches, or grading terrain, these heavy-duty machines are indispensable allies. With their hydraulic power and precision controls, skid steers excel at maneuvering in tight spaces and handling a variety of attachments, while excavators are masters of digging and loading tasks with their powerful arms and buckets. Join us as we delve into the world of earth-moving machinery, exploring the capabilities and applications of these essential tools in transforming landscapes and shaping the world around us.

The Cost of Execution
Since the cottage is remote, it took a bit of work just to get the equipment. Many phone calls later I had the 2 machines booked for the long weekend. The total cost ended up being just under $2000, the $600 delivery fee was a big factor. Add in a bunch of diesel and the weekend came out to roughly $2400. Was it worth it? Hell yes! Bellz is a pro with the mini excavator. He was able to bring dirt down faster than we could take it away. Although Keegan and I had no experience on the skid steer, we picked it up quick.
The Results
When the dust settled at the end of day 3, over 600 yards of dirt and sand had been moved. We were also able to do some grading on the driveway. As well as some improvement to my boat launch. All said and paid for I’m extremely happy with what we were able to accomplish for $2400.
What Else Do I Need to Know?
Even with no experience on the skid steer, you can still get a lot done. After a full day in the machine the controls start to come naturally. Don’t shy away from renting one of these if you have the requirement.
The mini excavator is a bit of a different story. If you’re on level ground digging a trench or a hole then sure, no problem. The machine is top heavy though, so doing more intricate work on unstable ground is a challenge.
Because if the hill we had to take down, if Bellz hadn’t been there this weekend there would have been zero chance of us getting as much done.
The Final Word
If you have a cottage project that requires some heavy lifting, don’t shy away from equipment rental. Not only will have have a blast driving it, you will learn a new skill. I also saved myself at least $5000 versus hiring a pro to come do the work. Remember, fishing season is just around the corner. Get the big jobs out of the way so when it’s time to fish there are no distractions!
