The Plan

The plan was simple, cutting trees! Before fishing season starts we’re in a rush to get the work done. A bunch of trees had to come down to get ready for some excavation happening soon. There was also a beast of a red pine slowly rotting that had to come down. Even though there’s snow on the ground, the weather was perfect for this annual event.

The Action

Cutting Trees!

Whatever you do, make it fun. A big part of cutting trees was getting rid of the limbs. That means one thing… fire! Because the fresh limbs are wet, we got a good hot fire going. Then there was no problem continuously adding to it over the weekend. The fire burnt for 72 hours continuously this year, a new Basshogg record.

Trees Wind and Fire

Fresh branches do need a bit of help now and again. For this there is nothing better than a leaf blower.

No Such Thing as Free Labour

When recruiting for a mission like this it’s important to keep the crew hydrated. Also, never let the work drag on too late in the day. Even though it was a work weekend, it’s still a great chance to get away from city life and unwind a bit.

The Results

We ended up cutting down one massive birch below the house. This was the problem child as it all had to be brought up hill. After that, the remaining 20 or so trees all fell from the top of the hill. This made things a lot easier on our old bodies. This forest management weekend will give us enough fore wood for part of next summer. It also cleared the way for the excavation that will be taking away 10 feet of the hill behind that red shed. Even without any bass fishing going on there’s always time to kick back and have a bit of fun.
