Pike and Walleye Open is officially underway! After a long winter it’s just great to get some lines back in the water. With the addition of two new boats this year, the anticipation is ramping up. On the eve of opening day some of the guys made the trip up to my cottage. We’re on a small lake, but the Lievre is a stones throw away. The Lievre is a massive river system offering upwards of 100 Km of river and lakes to explore. With the boats ready to go, we spent the night getting our tackle ready and prepping for a long wet day on the water.
Lac Poisson Blanc
We were expecting some excitement to catch some pike and walleye so we got to the launch at about 730 am. I guess the rain kept most people home, only 2 other trucks at the launch. A couple of our party decided to stay dry for the day so we only took the pontoon. We launched at Lac Campion and headed north to a channel and then south to Lac Poisson Blanc.
While it rained most of the day, we did have a few peaceful moments. The trip was filled with great views like the picture below. Fog over calm water, the islands emerging one after another. This area is known for great walleye fishing. Unfortunately the pontoon is filled with rookie walleye fisherman! We jigged, trolled, prayed… but not a nibble to be had. I said to heck with the walleye and put a big spoon on in hopes of catching a pike but even that was in vain.
The Best Part of Fishing
Even though the day yielded not a nibble and enough rain to force everyone into submission. There’s always some bright spots. We navigated a small part of a massive waterway. Even though the fish weren’t cooperating and the neither was the weather, we all enjoyed the trek. The ironic part of the day was when we got back to the cottage on my small lake. Shane managed to bring in a 4.5 pound pike off the end of my dock. We’ll be back to this water often to figure out these walleye but we’re also counting down the next few weeks to Bass Open!
